This week I watched two movies, The Sixth Sense and The Pursuit of Happyness. These great movies also had some great themes, shot types, camera movements editing styles and sound design to just pull you in and get immersed in the story. In The Sixth Sense the theme is communication because throughout the movie Cole is having a hard time fitting in because of his ability to see ghosts and when his mom tries to talk with him to see what's going on he can't really tell his mom what's going on, but Cole eventually learns how to face his fears dealing with this strange ability and is finally able to tell his mom about everything. The theme of The Pursuit of Happyness is to never give up on your dreams. Throughout the movie Chris is trying to get a better job so he can provide for his family, but he struggles with money. Chris and his son eventually end up becoming homeless which is another obstacle. Through his determination Chris finally gets the job he has been wanting.
In the first movie The Sixth Sense close up shots and extreme close up shots were used to show the characters expression. The use of low and high shots made it seem like we were spying on the character that was in frame. The eye line match shot really puts you in Cole's shoes when the teacher calls him a freak sharing with us the experience of what goes on in his day to day life.
In the second movie: The Pursuit of Happyness, the dialogue takes away the show. Most of the shots were over the shoulder shots that seemed to really convey a certain tone as the characters spoke.
In the Sixth Sense most of the camera movement was smooth unless a high suspenseful moment like Cole getting chased by a ghost which gave the feeling of uneasiness.
In the movie The Pursuit of Happyness the camera movement was mainly tracking the subject and shaky showing that there was tension in the story eventually smoothing out towards the end of the movie.
The editing used on The Sixth Sense really give it that horror vibe because Cole could see the ghosts but when another person looks cutting right back to that scene they were gone. I guess that's the reason why Cole didn't really want to talk to hos mom about it.
The editing used in The Pursuit of Happyness was mainly used to show different parts of the environment along with transitions that were mainly dissolves that would go on to the next scene, but in-between those transitions Chris had an obstacle coming at him.
The sound design in The Sixth Sense was mainly used to create the eeriness of each scene. With the eerie sounds and ghosts those scenes really made me speechless.
The sound design in The Pursuit of Happyness was mainly used to que something. In one scene Chris hears the hippie next to him singing which leads him to asking her to watch his belongings. This later leads to Chris to loosing his belongings which he needed to use in order to pay his rent.
In conclusion, I think that The Sixth Sense is the best because the shot types really just put you into the story along with the cuts and transitions that change the tone of the movie and the sound design that had me at the edge of my seat.
